The Front End

The front end displays a table of references, showing authors, title, journal name, year, type and up to two links. The columns are filled with the closest BibTex field for the job depending on the reference type, for example a book reference with no author names will show the editor’s names instead. The author and title filters at the top will filter the results by author and/or title, and the order of display can be adjusted via a drop down selection. If you sort by author, the list changes to show every author separately, i.e. duplicating entries where there are multiple authors. Downloading the BibTex file at this time will not show the duplicated entries though. The number of items to be shown can also be adjusted here. The number of items to be shown can also be adjusted here.

Links

The BibTex format allows for two types of links, urls and e-paper links. The former is designed to link to a webpage such as a citeseer page or research homepage, the latter should link directly to an electronic copy of the paper. When BibTex entries are added, the url and epaper are used to generate the links on the right hand side of the table. If the url field does not exist but there is a web address anywhere else in the BibTex string, this is extracted and copied into the url field in the database. If the url address links directly to a pdf file, this is copied to the epaper field for consistency. Obviously these links can be edited in both the front and back ends.

Adding New References

Logged in users will have access to a link in the bottom right hand corner of the component. This will take them to an input page with the same functionality as the back end input pages. The user can upload a BibTex file, paste a BibTex string or input fields manually.

Downloading BibTex Strings

If enabled, a link at the bottom takes the user to a page which lets them download a .bib file generated from the results in the table. These results are limited by the filters, but not by the pagination, i.e. all the returned results for a filter are included, and the ordering in the table is retained.
